Our Masonic Hall…

Silver River Lodge No 876 (incorporating by amalgamation Acacia Lodge No876) is the only masonic lodge that belongs to the United Grand Lodge of England in Uruguay. With over 161 years of tradition, Silver River Lodge has been and is instrumental in helping young men to become better citizens.
It does this through:

Integrity

Being one of our core values, it implies that truth and honour are essential characteristics of all members of our lodge.

Freemasons are focused on building themselves as men of integrity, and membership provides the structures to help achieve those goals. Being a Freemason gives members a sense of purpose, supporting and guiding them on their journey through life.

Friendship

In our ritual is referred as “brotherly love”. This taught and practiced between the members, and everyone in society. Being happy, and communicating happiness one of our key lessons that we learn to imbue between ourselves and all citizens of the lands in which we live.

Freemasonry can provide a common foundation for enduring friendships between members. Being a Freemason means something different to each fellow who joins. Undoubtedly the development of great friendships are a natural byproduct of the deep fraternal bonds that freemasonry inculcates in bringing together men of high moral worth, ability and yearning to improve themselves.

Respect

Tolerance and respect. Masonry places high importance on diversity. Men of all religions, races, and sexual orientations are members and we respect one another without equivocation or mental reservation of any kind. Lodges catering to Lady Freemasons are present in Uruguay and can be found at: Gran Logia Femenina del Uruguay The discussion of politics and religion is strictly forbidden at lodge meetings.

Charity

Helping the needy and those in distress has been a cornerstone of masonic tradition since the inception of our order. We take our charitable obligations and responsibilities very seriously and every meeting includes the circulation of a Bag of Benevolence to a designated charity. Each roll call of officers includes a Charity Steward who makes a report to the lodge at each meeting of our charitable endeavours. Lodges provide a structure by which all members of the lodge can collectively, as a team, contribute their time, funds and good will to charitable causes and so endeavour to make more of a difference in healing unforseen fractures that can affect anyone.

What is Freemasonry about?

A School

Morals/Esoteric

Freemasonry can be considered a school of men, who by their conjoined efforts learn from each other to become better men . The principal objective being to “know thyself”, through the attainment of knowledge derived from an understanding of the philosophical meaning and symbolism contained within our rituals and discussions in the lodge. Freemasonry is often described as “a journey towards light”.

A Fraternal Society

Friendship/Brotherly Love

We have a lot of fun in our meetings!  Enjoying the fraternal bonds between us is another benefit of becoming a freemason. After every formal Lodge meeting, members enjoy a delightful dinner together, amply called a festive board.

A Philanthropic Institution

Charity

Freemasonry teaches us to give back to society and, in particular to our local communities. This can be through activities such as volunteering but also through the giving of funds to charity.  So, every year the lodge picks an institution to direct our charitable efforts. In the year 2022, ADES, the lifeboat service was chosen and Silver River Lodge contributed over 5.000 USD to buy various rescue equipments.

What do I need to become a Freemason?

Belief in a supreme being

Constituent lodges of the United Grand Lodge of England require adult men to usually be over 21 years old and that believe in a ‘Supreme Being’. No matter which religion you practice, you can become a freemason. It necessarily follows that you cannot be a Freemason if your are an atheist.

Good knowledge of English

An adequate knowledge of English is required to become a member of Silver River Lodge No876 as although we meet in Montevideo Uruguay all our rituals and the business of the lodge are conducted and performed in English. We especially appreciate English spoken with Scottish accent!

Lodge Fees

A monthly fee is charged to all our members in order to pay for the upkeep our building, its facilities, and dues to de District Grand Lodge and the United Grand Lodge. As of July 2023 this fee is $1000 pesos a month. The fees vary from year to year, but it is not, we hope, dissimilar to the annual costs of joining a sports club or tennis club.  Freemasonry is open to all walks of life that may enjoy the craft.

An Upright Member of Society

Freemasonry emphasises the importance of high moral and ethical values. Its members are taught, through veiled allegory and symbols, the key principles of benevolence, upright behaviour, and associated qualities that we would like to see in everyone and most importantly in ourselves.
